Think twice before sharing that CD!

March 5th 2007

Most computer users  realise that they can pick up a virus by going onto the Internet but did you know that you can also pick them up off copied CD’s, Floppy discs and the new style USB memory sticks?

The little beasts can hop a ride from an infected PC onto any type of media that’s copied from someone else’s computer and onto yours, very often as part of the program you want to install on your computer and if your antivirus is not up to standard, you’ll have problems. Even music discs (like the ones bought at car boot sales), can be infected with viruses if they are not valid original copies, and many of my suspected Virus infection call outs turned out to be caused by “dodgy disks” or swapping files from other computers.

 So my  advice is

If the CD is not an original or you are not 100% sure that it came from a responsible source, do not risk damaging your PC by putting it into the drive. If you do, you could do unrecoverable harm to your computer’s files. Similarly, be very wary (and make your family aware) of the potential dangers placing floppy discs or memory sticks into other peoples computers and then back onto your own (and vice-versa).
